Britt's Favourite Gigs of 2014!

My Favourite Gigs of 2014!

Just like most of you I have been to loads of shows this year. And just like almost every music magazine/webzine we decided to draw up a "Best of 2014" list. It wasn't exactly an easy task to pick only 10 as there were so many great shows in the past 12 months, but we've got to face facts here: some were just better than others! So, without further ado, here are the 10 gigs that truly stood out to me in 2014:

1. Brand New - Guildhall, Southampton

As Brand New's #1 fan I honestly don't think I need to further explain why this one was hands down the absolute fucking best of the year, but for those of you who think they only got first place because I'm biased; you have never been more wrong in your entire life. The sick crowd, the stupidly amazing sing-alongs, the fact that every member of the band was nothing less than absolutely top-notch, the well-crafted setlist, the gorgeous venue. This story may be old when it comes to Brand New but it definitely still goes on and on.

2. Brand New - Troxy, London

Well, I know it's not very original but it's not my fault Brand New is just one of the best bands around. I mean, I know they are the single greatest band that walks this earth but for the sake of argument let's pretend there are some others that could compete. The band's London date was the day after their A++++++ performance in Southampton, so the bar was set high. Very high. Even though we hardly got any sleep thanks to sharing a room with a bunch of snoring dudes (I'm looking at you Front Bottoms!) and even though it was pretty damn impossible to rival the Southampton show my boys did me proud and very very VERY nearly did it anyway.

3. The Front Bottoms - King Tut's Wah Wah Hut, Glasgow

Just everything about their set in Glasgow was great. Without a doubt the sweatiest show I have been to this year though, but that is to be expected with the always more than amazing Glaswegian crowds that make every show fantastic. Although The Front Bottoms deserve some (okay, a lot of) credit for playing one of their best shows ever and just being a bunch of charming chums!

4. Rob Lynch - Slam Dunk North, Leeds

I hardly knew any of his songs before I went to see Rob Lynch's set at Slam Dunk Festival 2014, but HOLY SHIT am I grateful one of my good friends recommended him. Very very VERY much convinced by the end of the set. The fact that I went back to the UK a few months later to see him again must count for something, right? Amazing.

5. Jimmy Eat World - Reading Festival

I have always loved Jimmy Eat World so the fact that they played a show at both Reading's Main Stage and the tiny Lock Up stage was enough to get me overly excited already. Imagine my sheer delight when they started playing my favourite album front to back at said tiny Lock Up stage. Throw in some other big hits, an amazing crowd, and a band in top form and you've got yourself a top 5 spot!

6.  Dave Hause - Bitterzoet, Amsterdam

Dave Hause. That name alone ought to be enough to warrant a top 10 spot, but this night was especially amazing. I could go on and on about how Dave was amazing, about how the chemistry with his brother was adorable, about the crowd loving it, but just let me summarise it for you: everything was simply perfect. Dave was happy, the crowd was happy, Dave got his audience some free drinks. Great night!

7. Frank Turner - John Dee, Oslo

Those Norwegians know how to party! Out of the roughly 30+ Frank Turner shows I've seen this was definitely one of my favourites, so this one deserves to be in this list.

8. The Smith Street Band - Manchf3ster, Manchester

I know I'm a bit late to the Smith Street Band party, but better late than never! The Smith Street Band wasn't on the bill, but as Dumbledore would put it: "The surprise band that would be playing was a complete secret, so naturally the whole crowd knew." To be fair, I had seen the band play before and although I always liked their shows I only became truly very very much convinced at this 25 minute "surprise" set. Great party and such nice guys!

9.  Our Last Night - De Stip, Kwaadmechelen

I didn't really know anything about this band or their songs before going to this show, but as the night progressed I (not so) slowly but surely became a fan. This belter of a tune just sealed the deal. Amazing live band!

10. Elway - Winston, Amsterdam / Red City Radio - MTC Club, Cologne

Both of these shows were amazing and I refuse to choose. Sue me. Sorry not sorry!
